Business Data Science Is Ready to Start in August 2019
A new Research Master in Business Data Science is starting in August 2019. Business Data Science is a joint initiative of the Schools of Economics and Business of Erasmus University Rotterdam, the University of Amsterdam, and the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Developed by Dr. Francesca Sotgiu (VU), the Business Data Science Director of Graduate Studies, the new research master prepares talented and motivated students to enter high-quality PhD programs in Business. Everything is ready for the program to commence: the curriculum is finalized, the Faculty is comprised of top scholars from the three Schools, and the expert Scientific Committee is confirmed. Furthermore, the Business Data Science website is now live!
The Business Data Science program distinguishes itself from other Masters programs in data science by focussing on training academic researchers at the highest level and linking the data science foundation directly to business research. In the first year, students will acquire a solid data science foundation and learn a variety of methodological approaches, which they will apply to the specific business disciplines in the second year of studies. Working in close collaboration with the faculty, students will choose among the fields Finance, Human Resources and Organization, Marketing, Entrepreneurship and Innovation, and Supply Chain Analytics. Due to the extensive research experience throughout the program, graduating students will have the opportunity to jumpstart the PhD trajectory.
The BDS website is now live. It introduces the Faculty and the Scientific Committee members, guides through the admissions procedure, describes the program structure, the courses, the research fields, and provides practical information about course registration and the facilities. The event calendar shows the upcoming seminars, conferences, and other BDS-connected events. Most prominent of them are the two interdisciplinary Summer Schools co-organized by BDS and Tinbergen Institute: Introduction in Genome-Wide Data Analysis (July 22-26) and Econometric Methods for Forecasting and Data Science (August 19-23).
At present, accreditation for the research master in Business Data Science is pending. Until accreditation occurs, admitted applicants will be enrolled in the accredited Tinbergen Institute research master program, where the courses are hosted in a separate track. More information about the current accreditation process and its implications can be found on the BDS website.
Applications for BDS are still open for EEA and Swiss nationals till June 1 (later submissions will be considered on a rolling basis). Students with a strong quantitative background aspiring to an academic career are encouraged to apply. The admission requirements are listed on the website.
