Julia Schaumburg
The 2019 Engle Prize, awarded by the Journal of Financial Econometrics, has been awarded to Julia Schaumburg (School of Business and Economics, Vrije Universiteit). Julia received the prize for her article "Beyond dimension two: A test for higher-order tail risk” (2016, co-authors: Carsten Bormann and Melanie Schienle). The Engle Prize was awarded to a young scholar, for best paper published in 2016, 2017 and 2018 volumes.

Xu Lin
The Koninklijke Hollandsche Maatschappij der Wetenschappen (Royal Dutch Society of Sciences) has awarded the Jan Brouwer Scriptieprijs (thesis award) to TI graduate Xu Lin. Lin wrote her thesis entitled Buying Time to Save Lives: Evaluating COVID-19 Lockdown Policies using a Behavioral SEIR as part of the Research Master in Economics at the Tinbergen Institute. Xu Lin is currently a PhD candidate at the University of Amsterdam. TI Research Fellow Sweder van Wijnbergen acted as supervisor for Xu Lin’s master thesis.

Albert J. Menkveld ranked first in the 2020 Dutch Economists Top 40. The Economist Top 40 (economentop) is a list of the best publishing economists in the Netherlands published annually by ESB magazine (Economisch Statistische Berichten). Didier Nibbering
PhD alumnus Didier was granted a bronze statue and a cash prize of 10,000 euros by Ingrid van Engelshoven, the Dutch Minister of Education, Culture and Science. According to the Chair of the jury, professor Philip Hans Franses, Nibbering was awarded the prize because his dissertation is "highly developed in terms of quality and content ... well-written and distinctive because of the clear theorization and impressive in the original way of thinking". Amongst the nominees was another Tinbergen Institute alumnus, dr. Merrick Li.

Esad Smajlbegovic (Erasmus School of Economics) has been awarded the 2019 Top Talent Researcher Award (together with Ying Gan and Krzysztof Postek). The award is awarded by the Management Team of Erasmus School of Economics.

Eva Janssens (Federal Reserve Board) received an Honorable Mention from the KVS for her thesis 'Estimation and identification in macroeconomic models with incomplete markets'. Research fellow Christian Stoltenberg acted as supervisor. Eva received the Honorable Mention during the award of the KVS Medal, which is awarded every three years (previously every two years) to the student who has written and defended the best dissertation in economics during the preceding period.

Hong Deng (Erasmus University Rotterdam) won the best paper award (PhD track) at the Marketing Dynamics Conference 2022, which took place at Georgia State University on November 10-12. For the award the three best papers in the PhD track were selected based on the audience feedback and the committee evaluation.
