Carlos Riumallo Herl obtains NWO Vidi grant
The Dutch Research Council (NWO) has awarded Carlos Riumallo Herl of the Erasmus School of Economics a prestigious Vidi grant.
This NWO Vidi grant, worth up to €850,000, supports researchers who are transitioning into academic leadership roles. Vidi recipients demonstrate exceptional scholarly qualities that go beyond the ordinary.
The grant enables Carlos to pursue scientifically innovative research and to establish or expand his own research group.
Research fellow Pilar García-Gómez, Vice Dean and Director of Research at Erasmus School of Economics, expresses her admiration for this achievement: ‘In today’s academic landscape, competition for personal excellence grants is fiercer than ever, as is their importance. Securing such a grant requires immense effort, perseverance, and clear leadership skills. We wholeheartedly congratulate Carlos on this remarkable accomplishment.’
Research project
The project, titled “Screening for cardiovascular diseases: The role of behavioural and non-behavioural barriers to uptake”, studies why individuals often fail to engage in preventive care for cardiovascular diseases.
The research investigates how people form beliefs about health risks and disease severity, and how these perceptions influence screening attendance. By identifying and addressing these misperceptions, the project aims to design interventions that encourage greater participation in preventive care.
Earlier recognition
Throughout his career, Carlos has received numerous grants and awards, including the LEaDing Fellowship (COFUND), the EU Horizon 2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellowship. In 2023, he was awarded an NWO Open Competition SSH-XS grant for his project examining the impact of the housing affordability crisis on mental health at the population level.
