Carolyn Fischer (School of Business and Economics, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam) obtained the prestigious research chair to analyze climate economics, innovation and policy as part of the Canada 150 Research Chairs funds. The Chair is created for a seven-year term and is invested through the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC).

The project will be supervised by research fellows Arthur Schram and Joep Sonnemans, at the Center for Research in Experimental Economics and Political Decision making (CREED) at the Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Amsterdam.

Eric Bartelsman, Sabien Dobbelaere
A consortium of European research partners, including TI Fellows Eric Bartelsman and Sabien Dobbelaere from School of Business and Economics, Vrije Universiteit, were awarded a grant for a three year Horizon 2020 research project. The project, Raising EU Productivity: Lessons from Improved Micro Data (MicroProd), will examine the empirical observation that productivity growth in the developed world has slowed down in the past decade despite both continuation of technological innovation as well as greater openness to trade.
Aysu Okbay
NWO awarded a VENI grant to Aysu Okbay, Assistant Professor at the School of Business and Economics (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam), for her project "Polygenic prediction and its application in social science". Project description: With increasing availability of genetic data, it is becoming feasible to investigate the genetics of behavioural traits, and construct genetic predictors with meaningful predictive power. By building a public repository of genetic predictors for major social-science data sets, this project aims to facilitate their use in social science.

Bastian Ravesteijn has been awarded a LEaDing fellowship for two years. Eric Koomen (School of Business and Economics, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam) is responsible for developing the land use and transport modelling environment within the new research project SIMETRI. The research project SIMETRI (Sustainable Mobility and Equality in mega-ciTy RegIons: patterns, mechanisms and governance) brings together researchers from UCL, Birkbeck University of London, King’s College London, VU Spatial Economics, Shenzhen University, Shenzhen Institute of Research and Innovation, The University of Hong Kong and Sun Yat-sen University. SIMETRI will develop a world-class science platform relevant to political decision-makers responsible for housing, transport, employment and urban development in the world’s biggest mega-city region, the Pearl River Delta Greater Bay Area. The platform integrates work on inequality indicators and predicting future land use and transport developed in western Europe in London and the Randstad with related work in Shenzhen and Guangzhou, producing a system that will use state-of-the-art simulation models, big data from routine transport, and new ways of using information technology for participatory governance. Description: The research project U-PASS (Urban Public Administration and ServiceS innovation for Innovative Urban Mobility Management and Policy) brings together researchers from VU, Leeds University Beijing Jiaotong University, Zhejiang University, and the Beijing Transport Research Institute. U-PASS, led by Erik Verhoef, addresses the world-wide shared desire and need for more efficient, reliable and environmentally sustainable urban transport, with a focus on policies and services such as tradable credits schemes, automated vehicles, electric driving, ride sharing, car sharing, and cycling. Philipp Koellinger
Philipp Koellinger (School of Business and Economics, Vrije Universiteit) received a Netspar Topicality Grant for his research project "The effects of genetic health risks on personal expected longevity, insurance coverage, and retirement decisions". Description: Life-cycle decisions are in part based on how long people expect to live. Therefore, observable health risks have the potential to affect individual-level decision making. Currently, genetic health information is becoming increasingly available to patients and consumers, but the extent to which genetic information may affect retirement decisions, e.g., savings, insurance coverage, and withdrawals of pension funds, is largely unexplored. We propose a research project that aims to investigate how genetic risk factors and access to genetic information may affect retirement decisions. Our proposed project uses a genetically informed empirical study design, something that has previously not been done.
Olivier Marie
Olivier Marie, Professor of Labour Economics at Erasmus School of Economics has been awarded a Vidi grant for his project entitled: “The Non-Making of a Criminal”. Crime has recently fallen significantly in the Netherlands with 25% less offences committed than a decade ago. The overall cost of crime to society has simultaneously increased making each offence committed ever more expensive and thus urgent to better understand this crime drop to further improve crime prevention efficiency. The main objectives of this project are twofold. First, advance scientific knowledge of the causes of crime. Second, propose novel efficient policy tools to prevent it. Crucially, it will seek to achieve both these goals while simultaneously developing the concept of a life-cycle approach as the norm in economics of crime research.

Joep Sonnemans, Sander Onderstal
Sander Onderstal and Joep Sonnemans (Amsterdam School of Economics, University of Amsterdam) have been awarded an EU Horizon 2020 grant for their project "Improving Sustainability in Food Processing using Moderate Electric Fields for Process Intensification and Smart Processing." The grant was awarded to a consortium of seven European universities: coordinating institution University College Dublin (Ireland), Sheffield Hallam University (UK), Università degli Studi di Salerno (Italy), Technical University of Valencia (Spain), Lund University (Sweden), TU Berlin (Germany), and the University of Amsterdam. The total amount received for the project is € 1,300,000 euros, with € 250,000 allocated to the University of Amsterdam. The Dutch part of the grant will be covered by NWO's (Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research) natural sciences domain (ENW).

NWO awarded a VICI grant to Albert J. Menkveld (School of Business and Economics, Vrije Universiteit) for his research project "Financial Techology (FinTech's) Disruptive Impact on Financial Markets: Social Costs and Benefits of an Emerging New Architecture”. Albert’s research focuses on robotic trading. Robots facilitate trade, but increasingly act as traders themselves. Is this new architecture better than the old one? And what are the risks involved?
