TI alumnus Merrick (Zhen) Li has been awarded Joop Hartog Dissertation Award for the best PhD thesis at the Amsterdam School of Economics defended in 2018 or 2019. The award consists of a medal and a cash prize of EUR 2,500. The prize has been awarded biannually since 2008.

For his paper on 'The Welfare Effects of Greenbelt Policy: Evidence from England', Hans (School of Business and Economics, Vrije Universiteit Amserdam) received the Sakip Sabanci International Research Award from the Sabanci University in Istanbul. This year, the award acknowledges studies concentrating on the government's role in and economic policies related to the wide range of topics from inequality to income distribution, climate change to energy, traffic congestion to air pollution, transportation to housing. The prize amounts to 10.000 $.

The two participating teams with students of the research master program in Economics took home first and second place in the National Economics Olympiad (NEO), a problem-solving competition for Bachelor and Master students in Economics, that was held completely remotely on March 5. TI Research master students Antonia Kurz and Yasmine van der Straten (on photo), together with Andrea Pogliano from the Erasmus University Rotterdam got first place. The team comprised of TI research master students Aishameriane Schmidt, Andrea Titton and Oliver Feltham took the second place.

Assistant Professor Chen Li of Erasmus School of Economics has obtained an EUR Fellowship for her research project "Identifying and Reducing Biases under Social Uncertainty". With the EUR Fellowship Erasmus University Rotterdam is supporting talented researchers at the early stage of their academic career. The fellowship consists of a grant of € 135,000, to carry out research for a maximum of two years.

Thirty universities from all over the world participated in the yearly Econometric Game on April 8-9. PhD students of the Tinbergen Institute were part of the teams of Erasmus University Rotterdam, the University of Amsterdam and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. The team of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, consisting of TI PhD students and research master alumni Quint Wiersma (team captain) and Mariia Artemova, and VU master students Niels Ota and Arne Platteau, were rewarded a second place in this prestigious competition for students in econometrics. The team of Erasmus University Rotterdam with TI PhD student Terri van der Zwan (team captain) made top 10.
