    Simon Mayer

    On September 17, 2021, the Center for Financial Frictions (FRIC) and the Department of Finance at the Copenhagen Business School (CBS) host the ninth edition of their AQR Top Finance Graduate Award. Among this year's winners is Simon Mayer, with his paper entitled Money Creation in Decentralized Finance: A Dynamic Model of Stablecoin and Crypto Shadow Banking. Prize $ 10,000. The other three winners have a PhD from Chicago, Harvard and Columbia University.

    Sweder van Wijnbergen (University of Amsterdam) was awarded the Pierson Penning on 16 December 2020. The medal was presented by Klaas Knot, chairman of the board of the Pierson Fund and president of De Nederlandsche Bank. The Pierson Medal is awarded once every 3 years to highly deserving Dutch economists who have distinguished themselves through the quality and depth of their publications.

  • Fulbright Fellowship Awarded to PhD student Terri van der Zwan

    Terri van der Zwan

    Terri van der Zwan, Tinbergen Institute PhD candidate at the Econometric Institute of Erasmus School of Economics, has received a Fulbright Promovendus Award to research new methodologies on how to combine multi-frequency data.Terri will spend the Fall semester of the academic year 2022-2023 in the United States conducting research for her next project, attending seminars and conferences, and building relationships with fellow scholars.She will be based at the Rady School of Management, hosted by Professor Allan Timmermann at the University of California San Diego (UCSD).

  • Xu Lin was awarded the Jan Brouwer Scriptie prijs

    Xu Lin

    The Koninklijke Hollandsche Maatschappij der Wetenschappen (Royal Dutch Society of Sciences) has awarded the Jan Brouwer Scriptieprijs (thesis award) to TI graduate Xu Lin. Lin wrote her thesis entitled Buying Time to Save Lives: Evaluating COVID-19 Lockdown Policies using a Behavioral SEIR as part of the Research Master in Economics at the Tinbergen Institute. Xu Lin is currently a PhD candidate at the University of Amsterdam. TI Research Fellow Sweder van Wijnbergen acted as supervisor for Xu Lin’s master thesis.

    Hong Deng (Erasmus University Rotterdam) won the best paper award (PhD track) for her research on ‘Real-Time Personalization in Dynamic Environments’’, at the Marketing Dynamics Conference 2022, which took place at Georgia State University on November 10-12.

    Julius Ilciukas wins best PhD paper award at the 5th Baltic Economic Conference, organized by the Baltic Economic Association. The Baltic Economic Conference is the annual conference, rotating every year within the three Baltic countries. This year the conference took place in Riga, Latvia, organized by the Baltic Economic Association, in cooperation with the Bank of Latvia and the Stockholm School of Economics in Riga.

  • ODISSEI Microdata Access Grant (MAG) for Paul Muller

    Paul Muller

    Paul Muller (School of Business and Economics, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam) received the ODISSEI Microdata Access Grant for the research project evaluating the impact and effectiveness of the 30% tax rule. Additionally, the Ministry of Finance supports the project through providing access to unique data on who has benefited from the 30% tax rule. The data has been linked with CBS microdata. he project will be carried out by Massimo Giuliodori (UvA) and Paul Muller (VU). Lisa Timm (Research Master student Tinbergen Institute) will write her PhD thesis on these topics.

  • National Institute of Health (NIH-US) Grant for Titus Galama

    Titus Galama

    A team of international researchers, led by Titus Galama (School of Business and Economics, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam), obtained one year of NIH funding for the project: Identifying gene-by-environment interplay in health behaviour. The grant is awarded by the National Institute of Health (NIH).

  • NWO research grant for multidisciplinary team including Vladimir Karamychev

    Vladimir Karamychev

    A multidisciplinary research team, including fellow Vladimir Karamychev (Erasmus School of Economics), has received a research grant from the Dutch Research Council (NWO). The grant is 500,000 euro worth and awarded to study the effect of energy transition on energy consumption and fuel poverty of low income households. In the project, which goes under the acronym BELOpens external (Behaviour, Energy transition, Low income), a consortium of three universities and four social housing providers participate.

  • The 2014 Journal of Applied Econometrics Dissertation Prize for Anne Opschoor

    Anne Opschoor

    Anne Opschoor has won the 2014 Journal of Applied Econometrics Dissertation Prize for his paper “Improving Density Forecasts and Value-at-Risk Estimates by Combining Densities” (co-authors Dick van Dijk and Michel van der Wel (both Erasmus School of Economics). Anne Opschoor defended his PhD thesis at the Erasmus School of Economics. The reviewers lauded the careful and rigorous application of econometric techniques, the appropriate interpretation of the results, and the economic content of the nominated paper. The Journal of Applied Econometrics Dissertation Prize was launched in 2002, and is open to PhD students in economics writing a dissertation with a substantive empirical application in any field. Anne Opschoor receives a prize of $2,500 for this award.

  • Harkness Fellowship for Bastian Ravesteijn (ESE PhD student)

    PhD candidate Bastian Ravesteijn was recently awarded a Harkness Fellowship by the Commonwealth Fund. Bastian will spend twelve months at Harvard University to work with leading U.S. experts in health care policy.
