  • Netspar Topicality Grant for Philipp Koellinger

    Philipp Koellinger

    Philipp Koellinger (School of Business and Economics, Vrije Universiteit) received a Netspar Topicality Grant for his research project "The effects of genetic health risks on personal expected longevity, insurance coverage, and retirement decisions". Description: Life-cycle decisions are in part based on how long people expect to live. Therefore, observable health risks have the potential to affect individual-level decision making. Currently, genetic health information is becoming increasingly available to patients and consumers, but the extent to which genetic information may affect retirement decisions, e.g., savings, insurance coverage, and withdrawals of pension funds, is largely unexplored. We propose a research project that aims to investigate how genetic risk factors and access to genetic information may affect retirement decisions. Our proposed project uses a genetically informed empirical study design, something that has previously not been done.

  • Olivier Marie has been awarded an NWO VIDI Grant of € 800,000

    Olivier Marie

    Olivier Marie, Professor of Labour Economics at Erasmus School of Economics has been awarded a Vidi grant for his project entitled: “The Non-Making of a Criminal”. Crime has recently fallen significantly in the Netherlands with 25% less offences committed than a decade ago. The overall cost of crime to society has simultaneously increased making each offence committed ever more expensive and thus urgent to better understand this crime drop to further improve crime prevention efficiency. The main objectives of this project are twofold. First, advance scientific knowledge of the causes of crime. Second, propose novel efficient policy tools to prevent it. Crucially, it will seek to achieve both these goals while simultaneously developing the concept of a life-cycle approach as the norm in economics of crime research.

Perotti (University of Amsterdam) for their article "The Emergence of the Corporate Form."

  • Horizon 2020 funding for Sander Onderstal and Joep Sonnemans

    Joep Sonnemans, Sander Onderstal

    Sander Onderstal and Joep Sonnemans (Amsterdam School of Economics, University of Amsterdam) have been awarded an EU Horizon 2020 grant for their project "Improving Sustainability in Food Processing using Moderate Electric Fields for Process Intensification and Smart Processing." The grant was awarded to a consortium of seven European universities: coordinating institution University College Dublin (Ireland), Sheffield Hallam University (UK), Università degli Studi di Salerno (Italy), Technical University of Valencia (Spain), Lund University (Sweden), TU Berlin (Germany), and the University of Amsterdam. The total amount received for the project is € 1,300,000 euros, with € 250,000 allocated to the University of Amsterdam. The Dutch part of the grant will be covered by NWO's (Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research) natural sciences domain (ENW).

Albert’s research focuses on robotic trading. Robots facilitate trade, but increasingly act as traders themselves. Is this new architecture better than the old one? And what are the risks involved?

    Cars Hommes, Amsterdam School of Economics, University of Amsterdam, has received the Wim Duisenberg Research Fellowship from the European Central Bank (ECB). The Fellowship allows recipients to conduct policy-related economics research within the Directorate General Research of the ECB. The title of his research proposal is Behavioral & Experimental Macroeconomics and Policy Implications.

This research project aims to develop an integrated approach for supporting the long-term inclusive sustainable economic development of urbanizing deltas under uncertain changing conditions.     The Netherlands Institute for Crime and Law Enforcement (NCSR) has awarded a grant to Jan Rouwendal (School of Business and Economics, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam) for a PhD research project: "Broken Homes and Crime: Differential Effects of Parental Divorce, Parental Decease, and Out-of-Wedlock Birth on Criminal Involvement in Offspring." Description: This project investigates the effects of being raised in a single-parent family on criminal involvement of adolescents. It tests differential effects of parental divorce/separation, parental decease and out-of-wedlock birth on police-registered offending, and investigates the underlying mechanisms by exploring the duration of being raised in a single-parent family, and controls for characteristics of the parent(s), the children and the neighborhood of residence. The project exploits anonymized data of the complete Dutch population available through Statistics Netherlands

  • Anne Gielen has been awarded an NWO VIDI Grant of € 800,000

    Anne Gielen

    The research of Anne Gielen aims to further understanding of causal intergenerational relationships in welfare receipt by exploiting various quasi-natural experiments combined with ‘big data’. First, it investigates the extent to which welfare receipt in childhood has long term effects on socio-economic and health outcomes in adulthood, including reliance on welfare. In addition, it studies two critical mechanisms through which welfare dependency may be transmitted from one generation to the next, and investigates how dependency evolves over multiple generations. Finally, it extends the focus to the entire life cycle, identifying whether there exist critical phases over the life cycle where the impact of parental welfare dependency on next generations’ outcomes is largest. The findings of this research can help improve the design of welfare policy by indicating whether, when, and how public policies should target children in welfare receiving families.
