We evaluate a randomised controlled trial of a targeted preventive early-childhood intervention which has been in place in the Netherlands for 20 years. The intervention, Supportive Parenting, consists of house visits and was designed to prevent parenting problems and to help parents provide a healthy environment for children to grow up in. At 12 and 24 months, we find that Supportive Parenting improves parenting attitudes and children’s socio-emotional development. At age 6, we find that parents in the treatment group report more conduct problems in their children.
