Abstract
This study analyzes the role of feedback in employee development. I consider an organization where a supervisor gives feedback to a worker engaging in project implementation, and the worker can develop his ability after receiving the feedback. I show that while giving bad news about the worker's ability hurts his confidence and motivation, it is more likely to induce the agent to develop his ability. The supervisor gives bad news when only bad news induces the ability development and its success probability is sufficiently high. Perhaps counterintuitively, the supervisor is more likely to give bad news as her evaluation skill falls, highlighting the importance of considering a supervisor's level of expertise and experience when evaluating her feedback practices.
