Abstract

In recent years, there has been an ongoing debate about the effect smartphones have on youth mental health. One particular concern is the mental strain imposed by always being connected. Using country-level data for 53 high-income countries on the price of mobile data subscriptions, we investigate this concern by exploiting shocks in the price, and thus affordability, of mobile data. We find that a 20% drop in price causes an increase in the prevalence of anxiety disorders of young males, but not for females. Joint paper with Oliver Marie.
