Abstract
We study how public access to criminal records affect family formation and violence against women. Drawing on rich administrative data and quasi-random listing of criminal offenders we show that increased visibility of criminal records decrease the probability of entering a relationship among males single at baseline and increase the probability of divorce among non-single males. Males single at baseline also have a significantly higher risk of committing violence against women. This result cannot be explained by changes in reporting behavior or partner characteristics. Instead, we find increases in problems related to mental health, alcohol and drugs.
