Annika Camehl awarded an NWO grant for research bridging micro- to macro-level

Research fellow Annika Camehl (Erasmus University Rotterdam) has been awarded an Open Competition SSH XS grant by the Dutch Research Council (NWO) in the second round of 2025.

Annika Camehl awarded an NWO grant for research bridging micro- to macro-level
Project

Her project, titled 'From Micro to Macro: Estimating the Economic Effects of Rare Events' tackles a pressing challenge: how to understand the macroeconomic impact of rare but severe events, like floods or trade shocks, when national (macro-level) data is too limited.

The project introduces a new econometric method that bridges detailed local (micro-level) data with macro-level outcomes. By combining insights from households, firms, or regions with broader economic models, the method addresses key gaps in estimating the broader economic effects of rare events. This innovative approach offers a broadly-applicable tool for studying disruptions in economies affected by climate change, geopolitical tensions, or abrupt policy shifts and guiding policy responses to mitigate the effects.

Annika is an associate professor at the Econometric Institute of Erasmus School of Economics. She will receive a grant of up to 50,000 euro.

NWO Open Competition SSH

Launched in 2022, the NWO Open Competition SSH Call offers three types of grants to support research in the social sciences and humanities. The XS grant specifically encourages curiosity-driven, bold ideas through short-term projects (maximum 12 months). These high-risk, high-gain initiatives must be ground-breaking and contribute meaningfully to the advancement of science.
