Tinbergen Institute supports the nationwide protest
The Dutch coalition announced budget cuts of more than 1 billion euros for research funding and higher education. In addition, the coalition aims to reduce the inflow of international students and to discourage the use of English. These measures, if enacted, will have severe consequences for Dutch universities, which currently benefit substantially from their international orientation in research and teaching. The intended budget cuts will seriously harm not only the academic climate, but also knowledge spillovers to the Dutch economy and the competitive position of the Netherlands.
Tinbergen Institute has positioned itself within the international academic community. We provide career opportunities to young ambitious scholars who often turned out to make significant academic and societal contributions. We have always benefited from international students and scholars and the knowledge they brought to our institute and the associated universities.
We therefore support the nationwide protest on Monday November 25, 2024 and encourage everyone to join the event at the Malieveld in The Hague. The protest starts at 13.00. WOinActie has published a call to Dutch university boards.
Update Wednesday November 13, 2024: The protest against higher education cuts that was to take place on November 14 in Utrecht was cancelled by the municipality of Utrecht.
