Niels Rietveld appointed as Professor of Economics and Genetics
As of 1 July 2025, research fellow Niels Rietveld has been appointed as Professor of Economics and Genetics at the Erasmus School of Economics, Erasmus University. The promotion recognises his outstanding contributions to research, teaching, and leadership within the academic community.

Niels joined the Erasmus School of Economics in 2010 as a PhD candidate, and has made significant strides in economic and interdisciplinary research, publishing extensively in top-tier journals, including Science, Nature, and The Review of Economic Studies.
His pioneering work bridges economics and genetics, with a focus on understanding how genes, environments, and policies interact in shaping socio-economic inequalities. He earned prestigious grants, including an NWO Veni Grant (2015), an ERC Starting Grant (2020), a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action – Doctoral Network consortium grant in the Horizon Europe programme (2022) and an NWO Vidi Grant (2024).
Niels Rietveld plays a key role in shaping doctoral education at Erasmus School of Economics, serving as Director of Doctoral Education since 2023.
