Project: Adult Children’s Outcomes After Parental Nursing Home Entry

As populations age and the financial burden of long-term care rises, many developed countries increasingly rely on families to help care for elderly relatives. In the Netherlands, policy reforms have encouraged older people to substitute nursing home care for care provided by family members at home. While this might reduce public spending on long-term care, it may also place significant burdens on adult children who often provide informal care.

This project studies how a parent’s admission to a nursing home affects their adult children. Specifically, it examines outcomes such as employment, income, marital stability, and (mental) health. The study will use Dutch administrative data and an empirical approach that allows causal effects to be estimated. Understanding these effects is important because policies that restrict access to nursing homes may shift care burdens onto families. Quantifying these spillovers helps reveal the full costs and benefits of long-term care policy.
