Michiel Keyzer: Farewell Lecture and Royal Distinction

On June 27, fellow and professor Michiel Keyzer (VU Amsterdam) delivered his farewell lecture “World hunger, can one do much about it? Intervention mechanisms and margin for maneuver in seeking food security”, on the occasion of his retirement as professor of mathematical economics and as director of the Center for World Food Studies of VU Amsterdam.

The Center also organized a seminar in honor for Michiel Keyzer on “Development in theory and practice” where TI fellows Jan Willem Gunning and Cars Hommes were among the speakers.

Royal distinction

After his farewell lecture, Michiel Keyzer was awarded a royal distinction (Officier in de Orde van Oranje-Nassau) presented by the deputy mayor of Amstelveen. Professor Keyzer received the honor “for the extraordinary achievements in his scientific career”, “his active participation in national and international policy discussions on poverty alleviation and food security”, “the benefits for society at large in a considerable number of countries” and “the vision and personal engagement over a period of more than forty years that made all these results possible”.
