Maarten Pieter Schinkel presents ‘Green Cartel’ research at the European Commission
Research fellow Maarten Pieter Schinkel presented his research on ‘Green Cartels’, conducted with PhD student and research master alumnus Leonard Treuren at a European Commission (EC) congress on 4 February.
The conference was organized to explore how competition policy can contribute to the European Green Deal. Schinkel’s and Treuren’s research looks at the relationship between competition and investments made in sustainability.
The subject links the agendas of EC Vice-presidents Frans Timmermans and Margarethe Vestager, who both spoke at the event. The EC is studying whether the competition rules need to be revised in order to contribute to the transition towards a climate-neutral continent. There is intense lobbying from businesses and legal experts to establish ‘green market power’, but Schinkel warns against this, based on economic research.
