Sweder van Wijnbergen
Sweder van Wijnbergen (University of Amsterdam) was awarded the Pierson Penning on 16 December 2020. The medal was presented by Klaas Knot, chairman of the board of the Pierson Fund and president of De Nederlandsche Bank. The Pierson Medal is awarded once every 3 years to highly deserving Dutch economists who have distinguished themselves through the quality and depth of their publications.
Tim Boonen
The Society of Actuaries (SOA) selected research fellow Tim Boonen as the winner of the 2022 SOA Actuarial Science Early Career Award. In addition to the award, the winner also received a cash prize of $5,000.
Xu Lin
The Koninklijke Hollandsche Maatschappij der Wetenschappen (Royal Dutch Society of Sciences) has awarded the Jan Brouwer Scriptieprijs (thesis award) to TI graduate Xu Lin. Lin wrote her thesis entitled Buying Time to Save Lives: Evaluating COVID-19 Lockdown Policies using a Behavioral SEIR as part of the Research Master in Economics at the Tinbergen Institute. Xu Lin is currently a PhD candidate at the University of Amsterdam. TI Research Fellow Sweder van Wijnbergen acted as supervisor for Xu Lin’s master thesis.
Anne Opschoor
Anne Opschoor has won the 2014 Journal of Applied Econometrics Dissertation Prize for his paper “Improving Density Forecasts and Value-at-Risk Estimates by Combining Densities” (co-authors Dick van Dijk and Michel van der Wel (both Erasmus School of Economics). Anne Opschoor defended his PhD thesis at the Erasmus School of Economics. The reviewers lauded the careful and rigorous application of econometric techniques, the appropriate interpretation of the results, and the economic content of the nominated paper. The Journal of Applied Econometrics Dissertation Prize was launched in 2002, and is open to PhD students in economics writing a dissertation with a substantive empirical application in any field. Anne Opschoor receives a prize of $2,500 for this award.

Enrico Perotti (University of Amsterdam) and Eric Bartelsman (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam) have been granted NWO funding for their research project 'Understanding the role of IT progress and globalization in economic growth' in the NWO Open Competition - Social Sciences and Humanities. Project: A slowing global economy and steady rise in inequality are threatening social cohesion. The project investigates the role of IT progress and globalization in causing unequal economic growth, and explains puzzling trends in capital and labor markets. It will guide a sustainable policy for economic and financial stability. With the NWO Open Competition-SSH, NWO Social Sciences and Humanities wants to offer researchers the opportunity to carry out research into a subject of their own choosing without any thematic constraints. The funding instrument is intended for senior researchers who may no longer apply for a Veni, Vidi and Vici grant within the Talent Scheme.

Hans van Kippersluis (Erasmus School of Economics) has won a grant of € 525,000 from the NORFACE research program “Dynamics of Inequality Across the Life-course” (DIAL). This budget allows Van Kippersluis and the department of Applied Economics to attract two PhD candidates and one postdoctoral researcher.

This grant is awarded to researchers who have written a highly meritorious application for a one- or two-year high priority project.
Henri de Groot
NWO awarded a project to the Henri de Groot and Eric Koomen (School of Business and Economics, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam) in its 2016 Top Sector Water Call. This research project aims to develop an integrated approach for supporting the long-term inclusive sustainable economic development of urbanizing deltas under uncertain changing conditions. It will be carried out in cooperation with the Policy Analysis section of Delft University of technology and other partners including Deltares, PBL and Can Tho University (Viet Nam). Sander Onderstal and Joep Sonnemans (Amsterdam School of Economics, University of Amsterdam) have been awarded an EU Horizon 2020 grant for their project "Improving Sustainability in Food Processing using Moderate Electric Fields for Process Intensification and Smart Processing." The grant was awarded to a consortium of seven European universities: coordinating institution University College Dublin (Ireland), Sheffield Hallam University (UK), Università degli Studi di Salerno (Italy), Technical University of Valencia (Spain), Lund University (Sweden), TU Berlin (Germany), and the University of Amsterdam. The total amount received for the project is € 1,300,000 euros, with € 250,000 allocated to the University of Amsterdam. The Dutch part of the grant will be covered by NWO's (Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research) natural sciences domain (ENW).

Friedrich wants to make econometric methods more suitable and accessible for climate researchers, to study climate problems.

Matthijs Korevaar (Erasmus University Rotterdam) receives a Veni research grant from the Dutch Research Council (NWO) for project 'The effects of rental housing policy on the housing conditions and finances of households'. By combining cutting-edge policy evaluation methods with large linked datasets, Korevaar wants to identify causal effects of various housing policies on a wide range of outcomes.
Paul Muller
Paul Muller (School of Business and Economics, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam) received the ODISSEI Microdata Access Grant for the research project evaluating the impact and effectiveness of the 30% tax rule. Additionally, the Ministry of Finance supports the project through providing access to unique data on who has benefited from the 30% tax rule. The data has been linked with CBS microdata. he project will be carried out by Massimo Giuliodori (UvA) and Paul Muller (VU). Lisa Timm (Research Master student Tinbergen Institute) will write her PhD thesis on these topics.
