The prestigious Alfred P. Sloan Foundation is funding a groundbreaking research programme in which candidate fellow Eyo Herstad, Assistant Professor at the Econometric Institute of Erasmus School of Economics, is closely involved.

A recent study by Herstad, in collaboration with Prof. Donna K. Ginther (University of Kansas, United States) and Prof. Bruce A. Weinberg (Ohio State University, United States), explores the factors that influence how knowledge is produced by researchers across different career stages.

The research offers valuable insights into how universities can better support postdoctoral scholars as they transition into the next phase of their careers—whether within academia or in industry roles.

Key findings highlight that financial considerations, career prospects, and perceived academic value significantly shape researchers’ decisions. The study also underscores the importance of institutional support—including mentorship, access to funding, and professional networks—in motivating researchers to pursue diverse opportunities.
