Arthur Schram and Giorgia Romagnoli awarded with NWO SSH L grant
Research fellows Arthur Schram and Giorgia Romagnoli (University of Amsterdam) have been awarded with an Open Competition SSH L grant of € 798,000 by the Dutch Research Council (NWO).
This grant is aimed at excellent disciplinary, interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research.

The Hidden Reach of War: Understanding Conflict Spillovers, Social Trust, and Paths to Reconciliation
Violent conflicts abroad increasingly shape social tensions at home. This project studies how wars such as those in Ukraine and Gaza affect trust, cooperation, and polarization in countries not directly involved. Using experiments, surveys, and social media analysis, it examines how people form beliefs about institutions and other groups when exposed to distant conflict. The research also tests practical interventions to reduce polarization and support social cohesion, providing evidence-based insights for policymakers, universities, and civil society.

Arthur Schram is Professor of Experimental Economics and Giorgia Romagnoli is Associate Professor of Economics at the Amsterdam School of Economics, University of Amsterdam (UvA).
Arthur’s research interests include experimental economics, public economics, political economics, industrial organization, and behavioral economics. Giorgia uses lab and field experiments to conduct research in behavioral, political, and environmental economicsHer recent focus is on understanding how the design of market institutions affects the ethics and pro-sociality of our decisions.
Both are members of UvA’s Center for Research in Experimental Economics and Political Decision-making (CREED).
