The author analyses the fuel efficiency of private cars in relation to both the technical characteristics of the cars and the socio-economic characteristics of the drivers. Economic theory predicts a relationship between fuel prices and fuel efficiency. This relationship, as well as others suggested by the literature about driver behaviour, is investigated for a sample of Dutch drivers. The study finds thatthe age and profession of the driver, and fuel prices, have more significant effects than the gender and income of the driver, or the annual or commuting mileage.
