Philipp Koellinger (School of Business and Economics, Vrije Universiteit) received a Netspar Topicality Grant for his research project "The effects of genetic health risks on personal expected longevity, insurance coverage, and retirement decisions". Description: Life-cycle decisions are in part based on how long people expect to live. Therefore, observable health risks have the potential to affect individual-level decision making. Currently, genetic health information is becoming increasingly available to patients and consumers, but the extent to which genetic information may affect retirement decisions, e.g., savings, insurance coverage, and withdrawals of pension funds, is largely unexplored. We propose a research project that aims to investigate how genetic risk factors and access to genetic information may affect retirement decisions. Our proposed project uses a genetically informed empirical study design, something that has previously not been done.

The research outcomes can be used in many fields of economic and business to analyze different economic mechanisms before and after significant events, such as financial crises, technology shocks, oil price shocks, etc. With the EUR Fellowship Erasmus University Rotterdam wants to support talented researchers at the early stage of their academic career. The fellowship consists of a grant of € 135,000, to carry out research for a maximum of two years.

Among this year's winners is Simon Mayer, with his paper entitled Money Creation in Decentralized Finance: A Dynamic Model of Stablecoin and Crypto Shadow Banking. Prize $ 10,000. The other three winners have a PhD from Chicago, Harvard and Columbia University.

Julia received the prize for her article "Beyond dimension two: A test for higher-order tail risk” (2016, co-authors: Carsten Bormann and Melanie Schienle). The Engle Prize was awarded to a young scholar, for best paper published in 2016, 2017 and 2018 volumes.

Xu Lin was awarded the Jan Brouwer Scriptie prijs

The Koninklijke Hollandsche Maatschappij der Wetenschappen (Royal Dutch Society of Sciences) has awarded the Jan Brouwer Scriptieprijs (thesis award) to TI graduate Xu Lin. Lin wrote her thesis entitled Buying Time to Save Lives: Evaluating COVID-19 Lockdown Policies using a Behavioral SEIR as part of the Research Master in Economics at the Tinbergen Institute. Xu Lin is currently a PhD candidate at the University of Amsterdam. TI Research Fellow Sweder van Wijnbergen acted as supervisor for Xu Lin’s master thesis.
